PSLE Ivory and Michael bought mangoes at the prices shown below.
3 Large mangoes for $14
5 Small mangoes for $8
- Ivory bought an equal number of large and small mangoes. She spent $138 more on the large ones. How many mangoes did she buy altogether?
- Michael spent an equal amount of money on the large and small mangoes. What fraction of the mangoes he bought were small?
(a)
Number of large and small mangoes that Ivory bought is the same. Make the number of large and small mangoes the same. LCM of 3 and 5 is 15.
Cost of 3 large mangoes = $14
Cost of 15 large mangoes = 5 x 14 = $70
Cost of 5 small mangoes = $8
Cost of 15 small mangoes = 3 x 8 = $24
Difference in the cost of buying 15 small mangoes and 15 large mangoes
= 70 - 24
= $46
Number of sets of mangoes
= 138 ÷ 46
= 3
Number of mangoes that Ivory bought
= 3 x 2 x 15
= 90
(b)
Michael spent an equal amount of money on the large and small mangoes. Make the amount of money spent on the large and small mangoes the same.
LCM of 14 and 8 is 56.
Number of large mangoes that Michael bought
= 3 x (56 ÷ 14)
= 3 x 4
= 12
Number of the small mangoes that Michael bought
= 5 x (56 ÷ 8)
= 5 x 7
= 35
Fraction of the mangoes that Michael bought that were small
=
3512 + 35 =
