PSLE Julie and Perry bought mangoes at the prices shown below.
2 Large mangoes for $9
5 Small mangoes for $6
- Julie bought an equal number of large and small mangoes. She spent $132 more on the large ones. How many mangoes did she buy altogether?
- Perry spent an equal amount of money on the large and small mangoes. What fraction of the mangoes he bought were small?
(a)
Number of large and small mangoes that Julie bought is the same. Make the number of large and small mangoes the same. LCM of 2 and 5 is 10.
Cost of 2 large mangoes = $9
Cost of 10 large mangoes = 5 x 9 = $45
Cost of 5 small mangoes = $6
Cost of 10 small mangoes = 2 x 6 = $12
Difference in the cost of buying 10 small mangoes and 10 large mangoes
= 45 - 12
= $33
Number of sets of mangoes
= 132 ÷ 33
= 4
Number of mangoes that Julie bought
= 4 x 2 x 10
= 80
(b)
Perry spent an equal amount of money on the large and small mangoes. Make the amount of money spent on the large and small mangoes the same.
LCM of 9 and 6 is 18.
Number of large mangoes that Perry bought
= 2 x (18 ÷ 9)
= 2 x 2
= 4
Number of the small mangoes that Perry bought
= 5 x (18 ÷ 6)
= 5 x 3
= 15
Fraction of the mangoes that Perry bought that were small
=
154 + 15 =
