PSLE Wendy and Valen bought mangoes at the prices shown below.
3 Large mangoes for $8
4 Small mangoes for $4
- Wendy bought an equal number of large and small mangoes. She spent $80 more on the large ones. How many mangoes did she buy altogether?
- Valen spent an equal amount of money on the large and small mangoes. What fraction of the mangoes he bought were small?
(a)
Number of large and small mangoes that Wendy bought is the same. Make the number of large and small mangoes the same. LCM of 3 and 4 is 12.
Cost of 3 large mangoes = $8
Cost of 12 large mangoes = 4 x 8 = $32
Cost of 4 small mangoes = $4
Cost of 12 small mangoes = 3 x 4 = $12
Difference in the cost of buying 12 small mangoes and 12 large mangoes
= 32 - 12
= $20
Number of sets of mangoes
= 80 ÷ 20
= 4
Number of mangoes that Wendy bought
= 4 x 2 x 12
= 96
(b)
Valen spent an equal amount of money on the large and small mangoes. Make the amount of money spent on the large and small mangoes the same.
LCM of 8 and 4 is 8.
Number of large mangoes that Valen bought
= 3 x (8 ÷ 8)
= 3 x 1
= 3
Number of the small mangoes that Valen bought
= 4 x (8 ÷ 4)
= 4 x 2
= 8
Fraction of the mangoes that Valen bought that were small
=
83 + 8 =
