A fruit stall sold lemons at 60¢ and plums at 30¢ each. Xuan bought some lemons and Tina bought some plums from the stall. Xuan spent $0.90 more than Tina, but had 9 fruits fewer than Tina.

1. How many lemons did Xuan buy?
2. How much did Tina spend on the plums?

Number of lemons that Xuan bought = 1 u
Number of plums that Tina bought = 1 u + 9

Amount that Xuan paid = 0.6 x 1 u = 0.6 u
Amount that Tina paid = 0.3(1 u + 9) = 0.3 u + 2.7

If Tina spent another $0.90, both Tina and Xuan would spend the same amount.

0.6 u = 0.3 u + 2.7 + 0.9
0.6 u - 0.3 u = 2.7 + 0.9
0.3 u = 3.6

1 u = 3.6 ÷ 0.3 = 12

Number of lemons that Xuan bought
= 1 u
= 12

Amount that Tina spent on the plums
= 0.3 u + 2.7
= 0.3 x 12 + 2.7
= 3.6 + 2.7
= $6.30
