Number |
1 u |
1 u + 2 |
Value |
0.6 |
0.4 |
Total value |
0.6 u |
0.4 u + 0.8 |
(a)
Number of pomegranates that Jean bought = 1 u
Number of limes that Linda bought = 1 u + 2
Amount that Jean paid = 0.6 x 1 u = 0.6 u
Amount that Linda paid = 0.4(1 u + 2) = 0.4 u + 0.8
If Linda spent another $1.40, both Linda and Jean would spend the same amount.
0.6 u = 0.4 u + 0.8 + 1.4
0.6 u - 0.4 u = 0.8 + 1.4
0.2 u = 2.2
1 u = 2.2 ÷ 0.2 = 11
Number of pomegranates that Jean bought
= 1 u
= 11
(b)
Amount that Linda spent on the limes
= 0.4 u + 0.8
= 0.4 x 11 + 0.8
= 4.4 + 0.8
= $5.20
Answer(s): (a) 11; (b) $5.20
