A fruit stall sold lemons at 80¢ and dragon fruits at 50¢ each. Shannon bought some lemons and Xandra bought some dragon fruits from the stall. Xandra spent $1.30 less than Shannon, but had 4 fruits more than Shannon.

1. How many dragon fruits did Xandra buy?
2. How much did Shannon spend on the lemons?

Number of lemons that Shannon bought = 1 u
Number of dragon fruits that Xandra bought = 1 u + 4

Amount that Shannon paid = 0.8 x 1 u = 0.8 u
Amount that Xandra paid = 0.5(1 u + 4) = 0.5 u + 2

If Xandra spent another $1.30, both Xandra and Shannon would spend the same amount.

0.8 u = 0.5 u + 2 + 1.3
0.8 u - 0.5 u = 2 + 1.3
0.3 u = 3.3

1 u = 3.3 ÷ 0.3 = 11

Number of dragon fruits that Xandra bought
= 1 u + 4
= 11 + 4
= 15

= 0.8 u

= $8.80
