A fruit stall sold grapefruits at 70¢ and dates at 50¢ each. Julie bought some grapefruits and Jane bought some dates from the stall. Jane spent $0.40 less than Julie, but had 2 fruits more than Julie.

1. How many dates did Jane buy?
2. How much did Julie spend on the grapefruits?

Number of grapefruits that Julie bought = 1 u
Number of dates that Jane bought = 1 u + 2

Amount that Julie paid = 0.7 x 1 u = 0.7 u
Amount that Jane paid = 0.5(1 u + 2) = 0.5 u + 1

If Jane spent another $0.40, both Jane and Julie would spend the same amount.

0.7 u = 0.5 u + 1 + 0.4
0.7 u - 0.5 u = 1 + 0.4
0.2 u = 1.4

1 u = 1.4 ÷ 0.2 = 7

Number of dates that Jane bought
= 1 u + 2
= 7 + 2
= 9

Amount that Julie spent on the grapefruits
= 0.7 u 
= 0.7 x 7 
= $4.90
