A fruit stall sold guavas at 60¢ and tomatoes at 30¢ each. Winnie bought some guavas and Tina bought some tomatoes from the stall. Winnie spent $0.90 more than Tina, but had 3 fruits fewer than Tina.

1. How many guavas did Winnie buy?
2. How much did Tina spend on the tomatoes?

Number of guavas that Winnie bought = 1 u
Number of tomatoes that Tina bought = 1 u + 3

Amount that Winnie paid = 0.6 x 1 u = 0.6 u
Amount that Tina paid = 0.3(1 u + 3) = 0.3 u + 0.9

If Tina spent another $0.90, both Tina and Winnie would spend the same amount.

0.6 u = 0.3 u + 0.9 + 0.9
0.6 u - 0.3 u = 0.9 + 0.9
0.3 u = 1.8

1 u = 1.8 ÷ 0.3 = 6

Number of guavas that Winnie bought
= 1 u
= 6

Amount that Tina spent on the tomatoes
= 0.3 u + 0.9
= 0.3 x 6 + 0.9
= 1.8 + 0.9
= $2.70
