- How much did Linda spend on the guavas?

Oranges |
Guavas |
Number |
1 u |
1 u + 3 |
Value |
0.9 |
0.6 |
Total value |
0.9 u |
0.6 u + 1.8 |
(a)
Number of oranges that Jade bought = 1 u
Number of guavas that Linda bought = 1 u + 3
Amount that Jade paid = 0.9 x 1 u = 0.9 u
Amount that Linda paid = 0.6(1 u + 3) = 0.6 u + 1.8
If Linda spent another $0.60, both Linda and Jade would spend the same amount.
0.9 u = 0.6 u + 1.8 + 0.6
0.9 u - 0.6 u = 1.8 + 0.6
0.3 u = 2.4
1 u = 2.4 ÷ 0.3 = 8
Number of oranges that Jade bought
= 1 u
= 8
(b)
Amount that Linda spent on the guavas
= 0.6 u + 1.8
= 0.6 x 8 + 1.8
= 4.8 + 1.8
= $6.60
Answer(s): (a) 8; (b) $6.60
