1 u + 8 |

0.3 |
Total value |
0.6 u |
0.3 u + 2.4 |
(a)
Number of plums that Gem bought = 1 u
Number of apples that Fanny bought = 1 u + 8
Amount that Gem paid = 0.6 x 1 u = 0.6 u
Amount that Fanny paid = 0.3(1 u + 8) = 0.3 u + 2.4
If Fanny spent another $0.90, both Fanny and Gem would spend the same amount.
0.6 u = 0.3 u + 2.4 + 0.9
0.6 u - 0.3 u = 2.4 + 0.9
0.3 u = 3.3
1 u = 3.3 ÷ 0.3 = 11
Number of plums that Gem bought
= 1 u
= 11
(b)
Amount that Fanny spent on the apples
= 0.3 u + 2.4
= 0.3 x 11 + 2.4
= 3.3 + 2.4
= $5.70
Answer(s): (a) 11; (b) $5.70
