A fruit stall sold coconuts at 60¢ and dates at 30¢ each. Jen bought some coconuts and Cindy bought some dates from the stall. Jen spent $1.50 more than Cindy, but had 4 fruits fewer than Cindy.

1. How many coconuts did Jen buy?
2. How much did Cindy spend on the dates?

Number of coconuts that Jen bought = 1 u
Number of dates that Cindy bought = 1 u + 4

Amount that Jen paid = 0.6 x 1 u = 0.6 u
Amount that Cindy paid = 0.3(1 u + 4) = 0.3 u + 1.2

If Cindy spent another $1.50, both Cindy and Jen would spend the same amount.

0.6 u = 0.3 u + 1.2 + 1.5
0.6 u - 0.3 u = 1.2 + 1.5
0.3 u = 2.7

1 u = 2.7 ÷ 0.3 = 9

Number of coconuts that Jen bought
= 1 u
= 9

Amount that Cindy spent on the dates
= 0.3 u + 1.2
= 0.3 x 9 + 1.2
= 2.7 + 1.2
= $3.90
