Mangosteens |

Number |
1 u |
1 u + 7 |
Value |
0.6 |
0.3 |
Total value |
0.6 u |
0.3 u + 2.1 |
(a)
Number of mangosteens that Rachel bought = 1 u
Number of lemons that Mary bought = 1 u + 7
Amount that Rachel paid = 0.6 x 1 u = 0.6 u
Amount that Mary paid = 0.3(1 u + 7) = 0.3 u + 2.1
If Mary spent another $0.30, both Mary and Rachel would spend the same amount.
0.6 u = 0.3 u + 2.1 + 0.3
0.6 u - 0.3 u = 2.1 + 0.3
0.3 u = 2.4
1 u = 2.4 ÷ 0.3 = 8
Number of mangosteens that Rachel bought
= 1 u
= 8
(b)
Amount that Mary spent on the lemons
= 0.3 u + 2.1
= 0.3 x 8 + 2.1
= 2.4 + 2.1
= $4.50
Answer(s): (a) 8; (b) $4.50
