A fruit stall sold mangosteens at 70¢ and plums at 50¢ each. Raeann bought some mangosteens and Jane bought some plums from the stall. Jane spent $0.20 less than Raeann, but had 4 fruits more than Raeann.

1. How many plums did Jane buy?
2. How much did Raeann spend on the mangosteens?

Number of mangosteens that Raeann bought = 1 u
Number of plums that Jane bought = 1 u + 4

Amount that Raeann paid = 0.7 x 1 u = 0.7 u
Amount that Jane paid = 0.5(1 u + 4) = 0.5 u + 2

If Jane spent another $0.20, both Jane and Raeann would spend the same amount.

0.7 u = 0.5 u + 2 + 0.2
0.7 u - 0.5 u = 2 + 0.2
0.2 u = 2.2

1 u = 2.2 ÷ 0.2 = 11

Number of plums that Jane bought
= 1 u + 4
= 11 + 4
= 15

= 0.7 u
