A fruit stall sold mangosteens at 70¢ and kiwis at 40¢ each. Irene bought some mangosteens and Julie bought some kiwis from the stall. Julie spent $1.70 less than Irene, but had 4 fruits more than Irene.

1. How many kiwis did Julie buy?
2. How much did Irene spend on the mangosteens?

Number of mangosteens that Irene bought = 1 u
Number of kiwis that Julie bought = 1 u + 4

Amount that Irene paid = 0.7 x 1 u = 0.7 u
Amount that Julie paid = 0.4(1 u + 4) = 0.4 u + 1.6

If Julie spent another $1.70, both Julie and Irene would spend the same amount.

0.7 u = 0.4 u + 1.6 + 1.7
0.7 u - 0.4 u = 1.6 + 1.7
0.3 u = 3.3

1 u = 3.3 ÷ 0.3 = 11

Number of kiwis that Julie bought
= 1 u + 4
= 11 + 4
= 15
