A fruit stall sold avocados at 60¢ and papayas at 30¢ each. Irene bought some avocados and Lucy bought some papayas from the stall. Irene spent $0.90 more than Lucy, but had 6 fruits fewer than Lucy.

1. How many avocados did Irene buy?
2. How much did Lucy spend on the papayas?

Number of papayas that Lucy bought = 1 u + 6

Amount that Irene paid = 0.6 x 1 u = 0.6 u
Amount that Lucy paid = 0.3(1 u + 6) = 0.3 u + 1.8

If Lucy spent another $0.90, both Lucy and Irene would spend the same amount.

0.6 u = 0.3 u + 1.8 + 0.9
0.6 u - 0.3 u = 1.8 + 0.9
0.3 u = 2.7

1 u = 2.7 ÷ 0.3 = 9

Number of avocados that Irene bought
= 1 u
= 9

Amount that Lucy spent on the papayas
= 0.3 u + 1.8
= 0.3 x 9 + 1.8
= 2.7 + 1.8
= $4.50
