A fruit stall sold kiwis at 60¢ and tomatoes at 30¢ each. Emily bought some kiwis and Linda bought some tomatoes from the stall. Emily spent $1.50 more than Linda, but had 6 fruits fewer than Linda.

1. How many kiwis did Emily buy?
2. How much did Linda spend on the tomatoes?

Number of kiwis that Emily bought = 1 u
Number of tomatoes that Linda bought = 1 u + 6

Amount that Emily paid = 0.6 x 1 u = 0.6 u
Amount that Linda paid = 0.3(1 u + 6) = 0.3 u + 1.8

If Linda spent another $1.50, both Linda and Emily would spend the same amount.

0.6 u = 0.3 u + 1.8 + 1.5
0.6 u - 0.3 u = 1.8 + 1.5
0.3 u = 3.3

1 u = 3.3 ÷ 0.3 = 11

Number of kiwis that Emily bought
= 1 u
= 11

Amount that Linda spent on the tomatoes
= 0.3 u + 1.8
= 0.3 x 11 + 1.8
= 3.3 + 1.8
= $5.10
