A fruit stall sold plums at 70¢ and dragon fruits at 40¢ each. Sabrina bought some plums and Tiffany bought some dragon fruits from the stall. Tiffany spent $1.20 less than Sabrina, but had 6 fruits more than Sabrina.

1. How many dragon fruits did Tiffany buy?
2. How much did Sabrina spend on the plums?

Number of plums that Sabrina bought = 1 u
Number of dragon fruits that Tiffany bought = 1 u + 6

Amount that Sabrina paid = 0.7 x 1 u = 0.7 u
Amount that Tiffany paid = 0.4(1 u + 6) = 0.4 u + 2.4

If Tiffany spent another $1.20, both Tiffany and Sabrina would spend the same amount.

0.7 u = 0.4 u + 2.4 + 1.2
0.7 u - 0.4 u = 2.4 + 1.2
0.3 u = 3.6

1 u = 3.6 ÷ 0.3 = 12

Number of dragon fruits that Tiffany bought
= 1 u + 6
= 12 + 6
= 18
