Total value |

0.5 u + 2 |
(a)
Number of mandarin oranges that Cathy bought = 1 u
Number of peaches that Dana bought = 1 u + 4
Amount that Cathy paid = 0.7 x 1 u = 0.7 u
Amount that Dana paid = 0.5(1 u + 4) = 0.5 u + 2
If Dana spent another $0.40, both Dana and Cathy would spend the same amount.
0.7 u = 0.5 u + 2 + 0.4
0.7 u - 0.5 u = 2 + 0.4
0.2 u = 2.4
1 u = 2.4 ÷ 0.2 = 12
Number of peaches that Dana bought
= 1 u + 4
= 12 + 4
= 16
(b)
Amount that Cathy spent on the mandarin oranges
= 0.7 u
= 0.7 x 12
= $8.40
Answer(s): (a) 12; (b) $8.40
