A fruit stall sold apples at 60¢ and tomatoes at 30¢ each. Barbara bought some apples and Raeann bought some tomatoes from the stall. Raeann spent $0.90 less than Barbara, but had 8 fruits more than Barbara.

1. How many tomatoes did Raeann buy?
2. How much did Barbara spend on the apples?

Number of apples that Barbara bought = 1 u
Number of tomatoes that Raeann bought = 1 u + 8

Amount that Barbara paid = 0.6 x 1 u = 0.6 u
Amount that Raeann paid = 0.3(1 u + 8) = 0.3 u + 2.4

If Raeann spent another $0.90, both Raeann and Barbara would spend the same amount.

0.6 u = 0.3 u + 2.4 + 0.9
0.6 u - 0.3 u = 2.4 + 0.9
0.3 u = 3.3

1 u = 3.3 ÷ 0.3 = 11

Number of tomatoes that Raeann bought
= 1 u + 8
= 11 + 8
= 19

= 0.6 u 
= 0.6 x 11 
= $6.60
