- How much did Raeann spend on the mangosteens?

Mangosteens |
Apples |
Number |
1 u |
1 u + 3 |
Value |
0.9 |
0.6 |
Total value |
0.9 u |
0.6 u + 1.8 |
(a)
Number of mangosteens that Raeann bought = 1 u
Number of apples that Min bought = 1 u + 3
Amount that Raeann paid = 0.9 x 1 u = 0.9 u
Amount that Min paid = 0.6(1 u + 3) = 0.6 u + 1.8
If Min spent another $1.50, both Min and Raeann would spend the same amount.
0.9 u = 0.6 u + 1.8 + 1.5
0.9 u - 0.6 u = 1.8 + 1.5
0.3 u = 3.3
1 u = 3.3 ÷ 0.3 = 11
Number of apples that Min bought
= 1 u + 3
= 11 + 3
= 14
(b)
Amount that Raeann spent on the mangosteens
= 0.9 u
= 0.9 x 11
= $9.90
Answer(s): (a) 11; (b) $9.90
