A fruit stall sold coconuts at 60¢ and mandarin oranges at 30¢ each. Xuan bought some coconuts and Victoria bought some mandarin oranges from the stall. Victoria spent $0.60 less than Xuan, but had 5 fruits more than Xuan.

1. How many mandarin oranges did Victoria buy?
2. How much did Xuan spend on the coconuts?

Number of coconuts that Xuan bought = 1 u
Number of mandarin oranges that Victoria bought = 1 u + 5

Amount that Xuan paid = 0.6 x 1 u = 0.6 u
Amount that Victoria paid = 0.3(1 u + 5) = 0.3 u + 1.5

If Victoria spent another $0.60, both Victoria and Xuan would spend the same amount.

0.6 u = 0.3 u + 1.5 + 0.6
0.6 u - 0.3 u = 1.5 + 0.6
0.3 u = 2.1

1 u = 2.1 ÷ 0.3 = 7

Number of mandarin oranges that Victoria bought
= 1 u + 5
= 7 + 5
= 12

Amount that Xuan spent on the coconuts
= 0.6 u 
= 0.6 x 7 
= $4.20
