A fruit stall sold dragon fruits at 60¢ and mangosteens at 30¢ each. Jane bought some dragon fruits and Esther bought some mangosteens from the stall. Esther spent $0.60 less than Jane, but had 9 fruits more than Jane.

1. How many mangosteens did Esther buy?
2. How much did Jane spend on the dragon fruits?

Number of dragon fruits that Jane bought = 1 u
Number of mangosteens that Esther bought = 1 u + 9

Amount that Jane paid = 0.6 x 1 u = 0.6 u
Amount that Esther paid = 0.3(1 u + 9) = 0.3 u + 2.7

If Esther spent another $0.60, both Esther and Jane would spend the same amount.

0.6 u = 0.3 u + 2.7 + 0.6
0.6 u - 0.3 u = 2.7 + 0.6
0.3 u = 3.3

1 u = 3.3 ÷ 0.3 = 11

Number of mangosteens that Esther bought
= 1 u + 9
= 11 + 9
= 20

Amount that Jane spent on the dragon fruits
= 0.6 u 
= 0.6 x 11 
= $6.60
