Number |
1 u |
1 u + 4 |
Value |
0.9 |
0.6 |
Total value |
0.9 u |
0.6 u + 2.4 |
(a)
Number of pears that Jade bought = 1 u
Number of oranges that Esther bought = 1 u + 4
Amount that Jade paid = 0.9 x 1 u = 0.9 u
Amount that Esther paid = 0.6(1 u + 4) = 0.6 u + 2.4
If Esther spent another $1.20, both Esther and Jade would spend the same amount.
0.9 u = 0.6 u + 2.4 + 1.2
0.9 u - 0.6 u = 2.4 + 1.2
0.3 u = 3.6
1 u = 3.6 ÷ 0.3 = 12
Number of oranges that Esther bought
= 1 u + 4
= 12 + 4
= 16
(b)
Amount that Jade spent on the pears
= 0.9 u
= 0.9 x 12
= $10.80
Answer(s): (a) 12; (b) $10.80
