A fruit stall sold tomatoes at 80¢ and apples at 60¢ each. Gillian bought some tomatoes and Yoko bought some apples from the stall. Yoko spent $0.40 less than Gillian, but had 3 fruits more than Gillian.

1. How many apples did Yoko buy?
2. How much did Gillian spend on the tomatoes?

Number of tomatoes that Gillian bought = 1 u
Number of apples that Yoko bought = 1 u + 3

Amount that Gillian paid = 0.8 x 1 u = 0.8 u
Amount that Yoko paid = 0.6(1 u + 3) = 0.6 u + 1.8

If Yoko spent another $0.40, both Yoko and Gillian would spend the same amount.

0.8 u = 0.6 u + 1.8 + 0.4
0.8 u - 0.6 u = 1.8 + 0.4
0.2 u = 2.2

1 u = 2.2 ÷ 0.2 = 11

Number of apples that Yoko bought
= 1 u + 3
= 11 + 3
= 14

= 0.8 u 
= 0.8 x 11 
= $8.80
