A fruit stall sold dragon fruits at 80¢ and tomatoes at 50¢ each. Dana bought some dragon fruits and Shannon bought some tomatoes from the stall. Shannon spent $0.20 less than Dana, but had 5 fruits more than Dana.

1. How many tomatoes did Shannon buy?
2. How much did Dana spend on the dragon fruits?

Number of dragon fruits that Dana bought = 1 u
Number of tomatoes that Shannon bought = 1 u + 5

Amount that Dana paid = 0.8 x 1 u = 0.8 u
Amount that Shannon paid = 0.5(1 u + 5) = 0.5 u + 2.5

If Shannon spent another $0.20, both Shannon and Dana would spend the same amount.

0.8 u = 0.5 u + 2.5 + 0.2
0.8 u - 0.5 u = 2.5 + 0.2
0.3 u = 2.7

1 u = 2.7 ÷ 0.3 = 9

Number of tomatoes that Shannon bought
= 1 u + 5
= 9 + 5
= 14

Amount that Dana spent on the dragon fruits
= 0.8 u 
= 0.8 x 9 
= $7.20
