0.3 |
Total value |
0.6 u |
0.3 u + 1.5 |
(a)
Number of pears that Fiona bought = 1 u
Number of lemons that Gem bought = 1 u + 5
Amount that Fiona paid = 0.6 x 1 u = 0.6 u
Amount that Gem paid = 0.3(1 u + 5) = 0.3 u + 1.5
If Gem spent another $0.30, both Gem and Fiona would spend the same amount.
0.6 u = 0.3 u + 1.5 + 0.3
0.6 u - 0.3 u = 1.5 + 0.3
0.3 u = 1.8
1 u = 1.8 ÷ 0.3 = 6
Number of pears that Fiona bought
= 1 u
= 6
(b)
Amount that Gem spent on the lemons
= 0.3 u + 1.5
= 0.3 x 6 + 1.5
= 1.8 + 1.5
= $3.30
Answer(s): (a) 6; (b) $3.30
