- How much did Min spend on the apricots?

Peaches |
Apricots |
Number |
1 u |
1 u + 4 |
Value |
0.6 |
0.3 |
Total value |
0.6 u |
0.3 u + 1.2 |
(a)
Number of peaches that Raeann bought = 1 u
Number of apricots that Min bought = 1 u + 4
Amount that Raeann paid = 0.6 x 1 u = 0.6 u
Amount that Min paid = 0.3(1 u + 4) = 0.3 u + 1.2
If Min spent another $2.40, both Min and Raeann would spend the same amount.
0.6 u = 0.3 u + 1.2 + 2.4
0.6 u - 0.3 u = 1.2 + 2.4
0.3 u = 3.6
1 u = 3.6 ÷ 0.3 = 12
Number of peaches that Raeann bought
= 1 u
= 12
(b)
Amount that Min spent on the apricots
= 0.3 u + 1.2
= 0.3 x 12 + 1.2
= 3.6 + 1.2
= $4.80
Answer(s): (a) 12; (b) $4.80
