Number |
1 u |
1 u + 3 |
Value |
0.8 |
0.5 |
Total value |
0.8 u |
0.5 u + 1.5 |
(a)
Number of mangosteens that Zara bought = 1 u
Number of pears that Gabby bought = 1 u + 3
Amount that Zara paid = 0.8 x 1 u = 0.8 u
Amount that Gabby paid = 0.5(1 u + 3) = 0.5 u + 1.5
If Gabby spent another $0.60, both Gabby and Zara would spend the same amount.
0.8 u = 0.5 u + 1.5 + 0.6
0.8 u - 0.5 u = 1.5 + 0.6
0.3 u = 2.1
1 u = 2.1 ÷ 0.3 = 7
Number of pears that Gabby bought
= 1 u + 3
= 7 + 3
= 10
(b)
Amount that Zara spent on the mangosteens
= 0.8 u
= 0.8 x 7
= $5.60
Answer(s): (a) 7; (b) $5.60
