A fruit stall sold lemons at 70¢ and kiwis at 40¢ each. Tammy bought some lemons and Kylie bought some kiwis from the stall. Kylie spent $1.20 less than Tammy, but had 6 fruits more than Tammy.

1. How many kiwis did Kylie buy?
2. How much did Tammy spend on the lemons?

Number of lemons that Tammy bought = 1 u
Number of kiwis that Kylie bought = 1 u + 6

Amount that Tammy paid = 0.7 x 1 u = 0.7 u
Amount that Kylie paid = 0.4(1 u + 6) = 0.4 u + 2.4

If Kylie spent another $1.20, both Kylie and Tammy would spend the same amount.

0.7 u = 0.4 u + 2.4 + 1.2
0.7 u - 0.4 u = 2.4 + 1.2
0.3 u = 3.6

1 u = 3.6 ÷ 0.3 = 12

Number of kiwis that Kylie bought
= 1 u + 6
= 12 + 6
= 18

= 0.7 u 
= 0.7 x 12 
= $8.40
