A fruit stall sold peaches at 60¢ and avocados at 40¢ each. Penelope bought some peaches and Lynn bought some avocados from the stall. Lynn spent $0.40 less than Penelope, but had 3 fruits more than Penelope.

1. How many avocados did Lynn buy?
2. How much did Penelope spend on the peaches?

Number of peaches that Penelope bought = 1 u
Number of avocados that Lynn bought = 1 u + 3

Amount that Penelope paid = 0.6 x 1 u = 0.6 u
Amount that Lynn paid = 0.4(1 u + 3) = 0.4 u + 1.2

If Lynn spent another $0.40, both Lynn and Penelope would spend the same amount.

0.6 u = 0.4 u + 1.2 + 0.4
0.6 u - 0.4 u = 1.2 + 0.4
0.2 u = 1.6

1 u = 1.6 ÷ 0.2 = 8

Number of avocados that Lynn bought
= 1 u + 3
= 8 + 3
= 11

= 0.6 u

= $4.80
