1 u + 4 |
Value |
0.9 |
0.6 |
Total value |
0.9 u |
0.6 u + 2.4 |
(a)
Number of apples that Yoko bought = 1 u
Number of oranges that Mary bought = 1 u + 4
Amount that Yoko paid = 0.9 x 1 u = 0.9 u
Amount that Mary paid = 0.6(1 u + 4) = 0.6 u + 2.4
If Mary spent another $0.60, both Mary and Yoko would spend the same amount.
0.9 u = 0.6 u + 2.4 + 0.6
0.9 u - 0.6 u = 2.4 + 0.6
0.3 u = 3
1 u = 3 ÷ 0.3 = 10
Number of apples that Yoko bought
= 1 u
= 10
(b)
Amount that Mary spent on the oranges
= 0.6 u + 2.4
= 0.6 x 10 + 2.4
= 6 + 2.4
= $8.40
Answer(s): (a) 10; (b) $8.40
