A fruit stall sold dragon fruits at 70¢ and coconuts at 40¢ each. Jade bought some dragon fruits and Natalie bought some coconuts from the stall. Natalie spent $1.60 less than Jade, but had 2 fruits more than Jade.

1. How many coconuts did Natalie buy?
2. How much did Jade spend on the dragon fruits?

Number of dragon fruits that Jade bought = 1 u
Number of coconuts that Natalie bought = 1 u + 2

Amount that Jade paid = 0.7 x 1 u = 0.7 u
Amount that Natalie paid = 0.4(1 u + 2) = 0.4 u + 0.8

If Natalie spent another $1.60, both Natalie and Jade would spend the same amount.

0.7 u = 0.4 u + 0.8 + 1.6
0.7 u - 0.4 u = 0.8 + 1.6
0.3 u = 2.4

1 u = 2.4 ÷ 0.3 = 8

Number of coconuts that Natalie bought
= 1 u + 2
= 8 + 2
= 10

Amount that Jade spent on the dragon fruits
= 0.7 u 
= 0.7 x 8 
= $5.60
