A fruit stall sold plums at 80¢ and apricots at 60¢ each. Eva bought some plums and Usha bought some apricots from the stall. Usha spent $0.60 less than Eva, but had 2 fruits more than Eva.

1. How many apricots did Usha buy?
2. How much did Eva spend on the plums?

Number of plums that Eva bought = 1 u
Number of apricots that Usha bought = 1 u + 2

Amount that Eva paid = 0.8 x 1 u = 0.8 u
Amount that Usha paid = 0.6(1 u + 2) = 0.6 u + 1.2

If Usha spent another $0.60, both Usha and Eva would spend the same amount.

0.8 u = 0.6 u + 1.2 + 0.6
0.8 u - 0.6 u = 1.2 + 0.6
0.2 u = 1.8

1 u = 1.8 ÷ 0.2 = 9

Number of apricots that Usha bought
= 1 u + 2
= 9 + 2
= 11

Amount that Eva spent on the plums
= 0.8 u 
= 0.8 x 9 
= $7.20
