A fruit stall sold coconuts at 60¢ and dragon fruits at 30¢ each. Gabby bought some coconuts and Gem bought some dragon fruits from the stall. Gem spent $1.20 less than Gabby, but had 2 fruits more than Gabby.

1. How many dragon fruits did Gem buy?
2. How much did Gabby spend on the coconuts?

Number of coconuts that Gabby bought = 1 u
Number of dragon fruits that Gem bought = 1 u + 2

Amount that Gabby paid = 0.6 x 1 u = 0.6 u
Amount that Gem paid = 0.3(1 u + 2) = 0.3 u + 0.6

If Gem spent another $1.20, both Gem and Gabby would spend the same amount.

0.6 u = 0.3 u + 0.6 + 1.2
0.6 u - 0.3 u = 0.6 + 1.2
0.3 u = 1.8

1 u = 1.8 ÷ 0.3 = 6

Number of dragon fruits that Gem bought
= 1 u + 2
= 6 + 2
= 8

= 0.6 u 
= 0.6 x 6 
= $3.60
