Number |
1 u |
1 u + 3 |
Value |
0.6 |
0.4 |
Total value |
0.6 u |
0.4 u + 1.2 |
(a)
Number of grapefruits that Pamela bought = 1 u
Number of apples that Hilda bought = 1 u + 3
Amount that Pamela paid = 0.6 x 1 u = 0.6 u
Amount that Hilda paid = 0.4(1 u + 3) = 0.4 u + 1.2
If Hilda spent another $0.60, both Hilda and Pamela would spend the same amount.
0.6 u = 0.4 u + 1.2 + 0.6
0.6 u - 0.4 u = 1.2 + 0.6
0.2 u = 1.8
1 u = 1.8 ÷ 0.2 = 9
Number of apples that Hilda bought
= 1 u + 3
= 9 + 3
= 12
(b)
Amount that Pamela spent on the grapefruits
= 0.6 u
= 0.6 x 9
= $5.40
Answer(s): (a) 9; (b) $5.40
