A fruit stall sold kiwis at 80¢ and plums at 60¢ each. Jaslyn bought some kiwis and Dana bought some plums from the stall. Jaslyn spent $1.20 more than Dana, but had 2 fruits fewer than Dana.

1. How many kiwis did Jaslyn buy?
2. How much did Dana spend on the plums?

Number of plums that Dana bought = 1 u + 2

Amount that Jaslyn paid = 0.8 x 1 u = 0.8 u
Amount that Dana paid = 0.6(1 u + 2) = 0.6 u + 1.2

If Dana spent another $1.20, both Dana and Jaslyn would spend the same amount.

0.8 u = 0.6 u + 1.2 + 1.2
0.8 u - 0.6 u = 1.2 + 1.2
0.2 u = 2.4

1 u = 2.4 ÷ 0.2 = 12

Number of kiwis that Jaslyn bought
= 1 u
= 12

Amount that Dana spent on the plums
= 0.6 u + 1.2
= 0.6 x 12 + 1.2
= 7.2 + 1.2
= $8.40
