- How much did Min spend on the limes?

Papayas |
Limes |
Number |
1 u |
1 u + 2 |
Value |
0.9 |
0.6 |
Total value |
0.9 u |
0.6 u + 1.2 |
(a)
Number of papayas that Gwen bought = 1 u
Number of limes that Min bought = 1 u + 2
Amount that Gwen paid = 0.9 x 1 u = 0.9 u
Amount that Min paid = 0.6(1 u + 2) = 0.6 u + 1.2
If Min spent another $0.90, both Min and Gwen would spend the same amount.
0.9 u = 0.6 u + 1.2 + 0.9
0.9 u - 0.6 u = 1.2 + 0.9
0.3 u = 2.1
1 u = 2.1 ÷ 0.3 = 7
Number of papayas that Gwen bought
= 1 u
= 7
(b)
Amount that Min spent on the limes
= 0.6 u + 1.2
= 0.6 x 7 + 1.2
= 4.2 + 1.2
= $5.40
Answer(s): (a) 7; (b) $5.40
