1 u |
1 u + 9 |
Value |
0.6 |
0.3 |
Total value |
0.6 u |
0.3 u + 2.7 |
(a)
Number of peaches that Min bought = 1 u
Number of oranges that Betty bought = 1 u + 9
Amount that Min paid = 0.6 x 1 u = 0.6 u
Amount that Betty paid = 0.3(1 u + 9) = 0.3 u + 2.7
If Betty spent another $0.90, both Betty and Min would spend the same amount.
0.6 u = 0.3 u + 2.7 + 0.9
0.6 u - 0.3 u = 2.7 + 0.9
0.3 u = 3.6
1 u = 3.6 ÷ 0.3 = 12
Number of oranges that Betty bought
= 1 u + 9
= 12 + 9
= 21
(b)
Amount that Min spent on the peaches
= 0.6 u
= 0.6 x 12
= $7.20
Answer(s): (a) 12; (b) $7.20
