1 u + 2 |
Value |
0.8 |
0.6 |
Total value |
0.8 u |
0.6 u + 1.2 |
(a)
Number of dragon fruits that Emily bought = 1 u
Number of lemons that Marion bought = 1 u + 2
Amount that Emily paid = 0.8 x 1 u = 0.8 u
Amount that Marion paid = 0.6(1 u + 2) = 0.6 u + 1.2
If Marion spent another $0.20, both Marion and Emily would spend the same amount.
0.8 u = 0.6 u + 1.2 + 0.2
0.8 u - 0.6 u = 1.2 + 0.2
0.2 u = 1.4
1 u = 1.4 ÷ 0.2 = 7
Number of lemons that Marion bought
= 1 u + 2
= 7 + 2
= 9
(b)
Amount that Emily spent on the dragon fruits
= 0.8 u
= 0.8 x 7
= $5.60
Answer(s): (a) 7; (b) $5.60
