Number |

1 u + 2 |
Value |
0.7 |
0.4 |
Total value |
0.7 u |
0.4 u + 0.8 |
(a)
Number of pomegranates that Jane bought = 1 u
Number of grapefruits that Risa bought = 1 u + 2
Amount that Jane paid = 0.7 x 1 u = 0.7 u
Amount that Risa paid = 0.4(1 u + 2) = 0.4 u + 0.8
If Risa spent another $0.70, both Risa and Jane would spend the same amount.
0.7 u = 0.4 u + 0.8 + 0.7
0.7 u - 0.4 u = 0.8 + 0.7
0.3 u = 1.5
1 u = 1.5 ÷ 0.3 = 5
Number of grapefruits that Risa bought
= 1 u + 2
= 5 + 2
= 7
(b)
Amount that Jane spent on the pomegranates
= 0.7 u
= 0.7 x 5
= $3.50
Answer(s): (a) 5; (b) $3.50
