A fruit stall sold papayas at 60¢ and apricots at 30¢ each. Sabrina bought some papayas and Fanny bought some apricots from the stall. Sabrina spent $0.90 more than Fanny, but had 4 fruits fewer than Fanny.

1. How many papayas did Sabrina buy?
2. How much did Fanny spend on the apricots?

Number of papayas that Sabrina bought = 1 u
Number of apricots that Fanny bought = 1 u + 4

Amount that Sabrina paid = 0.6 x 1 u = 0.6 u
Amount that Fanny paid = 0.3(1 u + 4) = 0.3 u + 1.2

If Fanny spent another $0.90, both Fanny and Sabrina would spend the same amount.

0.6 u = 0.3 u + 1.2 + 0.9
0.6 u - 0.3 u = 1.2 + 0.9
0.3 u = 2.1

1 u = 2.1 ÷ 0.3 = 7

Number of papayas that Sabrina bought
= 1 u
= 7

Amount that Fanny spent on the apricots
= 0.3 u + 1.2
= 0.3 x 7 + 1.2
= 2.1 + 1.2
= $3.30
