A fruit stall sold guavas at 60¢ and lemons at 30¢ each. Lucy bought some guavas and Sabrina bought some lemons from the stall. Lucy spent $0.90 more than Sabrina, but had 6 fruits fewer than Sabrina.

1. How many guavas did Lucy buy?
2. How much did Sabrina spend on the lemons?

Number of guavas that Lucy bought = 1 u
Number of lemons that Sabrina bought = 1 u + 6

Amount that Lucy paid = 0.6 x 1 u = 0.6 u
Amount that Sabrina paid = 0.3(1 u + 6) = 0.3 u + 1.8

If Sabrina spent another $0.90, both Sabrina and Lucy would spend the same amount.

0.6 u = 0.3 u + 1.8 + 0.9
0.6 u - 0.3 u = 1.8 + 0.9
0.3 u = 2.7

1 u = 2.7 ÷ 0.3 = 9

Number of guavas that Lucy bought
= 1 u
= 9

Amount that Sabrina spent on the lemons
= 0.3 u + 1.8
= 0.3 x 9 + 1.8
= 2.7 + 1.8
= $4.50
