A fruit stall sold coconuts at 70¢ and pomegranates at 40¢ each. Eva bought some coconuts and Diana bought some pomegranates from the stall. Diana spent $1.90 less than Eva, but had 2 fruits more than Eva.

1. How many pomegranates did Diana buy?
2. How much did Eva spend on the coconuts?

Number of coconuts that Eva bought = 1 u
Number of pomegranates that Diana bought = 1 u + 2

Amount that Eva paid = 0.7 x 1 u = 0.7 u
Amount that Diana paid = 0.4(1 u + 2) = 0.4 u + 0.8

If Diana spent another $1.90, both Diana and Eva would spend the same amount.

0.7 u = 0.4 u + 0.8 + 1.9
0.7 u - 0.4 u = 0.8 + 1.9
0.3 u = 2.7

1 u = 2.7 ÷ 0.3 = 9

Number of pomegranates that Diana bought
= 1 u + 2
= 9 + 2
= 11

Amount that Eva spent on the coconuts
= 0.7 u 
= 0.7 x 9 
= $6.30
