1 u + 2 |
Value |

0.7 |
Total value |
0.9 u |
0.7 u + 1.4 |
(a)
Number of lemons that Cindy bought = 1 u
Number of plums that Irene bought = 1 u + 2
Amount that Cindy paid = 0.9 x 1 u = 0.9 u
Amount that Irene paid = 0.7(1 u + 2) = 0.7 u + 1.4
If Irene spent another $0.80, both Irene and Cindy would spend the same amount.
0.9 u = 0.7 u + 1.4 + 0.8
0.9 u - 0.7 u = 1.4 + 0.8
0.2 u = 2.2
1 u = 2.2 ÷ 0.2 = 11
Number of plums that Irene bought
= 1 u + 2
= 11 + 2
= 13
(b)
Amount that Cindy spent on the lemons
= 0.9 u
= 0.9 x 11
= $9.90
Answer(s): (a) 11; (b) $9.90
