A fruit stall sold plums at 70¢ and mangosteens at 40¢ each. Vanessa bought some plums and Yoko bought some mangosteens from the stall. Vanessa spent $2.10 more than Yoko, but had 3 fruits fewer than Yoko.

1. How many plums did Vanessa buy?
2. How much did Yoko spend on the mangosteens?

Number of plums that Vanessa bought = 1 u
Number of mangosteens that Yoko bought = 1 u + 3

Amount that Vanessa paid = 0.7 x 1 u = 0.7 u
Amount that Yoko paid = 0.4(1 u + 3) = 0.4 u + 1.2

If Yoko spent another $2.10, both Yoko and Vanessa would spend the same amount.

0.7 u = 0.4 u + 1.2 + 2.1
0.7 u - 0.4 u = 1.2 + 2.1
0.3 u = 3.3

1 u = 3.3 ÷ 0.3 = 11

Number of plums that Vanessa bought
= 1 u
= 11

Amount that Yoko spent on the mangosteens
= 0.4 u + 1.2
= 0.4 x 11 + 1.2
= 4.4 + 1.2
= $5.60
