A fruit stall sold lemons at 90¢ and dragon fruits at 60¢ each. Betty bought some lemons and Elyse bought some dragon fruits from the stall. Elyse spent $0.30 less than Betty, but had 4 fruits more than Betty.

1. How many dragon fruits did Elyse buy?
2. How much did Betty spend on the lemons?

Number of lemons that Betty bought = 1 u
Number of dragon fruits that Elyse bought = 1 u + 4

Amount that Betty paid = 0.9 x 1 u = 0.9 u
Amount that Elyse paid = 0.6(1 u + 4) = 0.6 u + 2.4

If Elyse spent another $0.30, both Elyse and Betty would spend the same amount.

0.9 u = 0.6 u + 2.4 + 0.3
0.9 u - 0.6 u = 2.4 + 0.3
0.3 u = 2.7

1 u = 2.7 ÷ 0.3 = 9

Number of dragon fruits that Elyse bought
= 1 u + 4
= 9 + 4
= 13

= 0.9 u 
= 0.9 x 9 
= $8.10
