1 u + 4 |

0.4 |
Total value |
0.7 u |
0.4 u + 1.6 |
(a)
Number of apples that Tammy bought = 1 u
Number of grapefruits that Jane bought = 1 u + 4
Amount that Tammy paid = 0.7 x 1 u = 0.7 u
Amount that Jane paid = 0.4(1 u + 4) = 0.4 u + 1.6
If Jane spent another $0.50, both Jane and Tammy would spend the same amount.
0.7 u = 0.4 u + 1.6 + 0.5
0.7 u - 0.4 u = 1.6 + 0.5
0.3 u = 2.1
1 u = 2.1 ÷ 0.3 = 7
Number of apples that Tammy bought
= 1 u
= 7
(b)
Amount that Jane spent on the grapefruits
= 0.4 u + 1.6
= 0.4 x 7 + 1.6
= 2.8 + 1.6
= $4.40
Answer(s): (a) 7; (b) $4.40
