A fruit stall sold limes at 60¢ and dragon fruits at 40¢ each. Gwen bought some limes and Jade bought some dragon fruits from the stall. Jade spent $0.40 less than Gwen, but had 3 fruits more than Gwen.

1. How many dragon fruits did Jade buy?
2. How much did Gwen spend on the limes?

Number of limes that Gwen bought = 1 u
Number of dragon fruits that Jade bought = 1 u + 3

Amount that Gwen paid = 0.6 x 1 u = 0.6 u
Amount that Jade paid = 0.4(1 u + 3) = 0.4 u + 1.2

If Jade spent another $0.40, both Jade and Gwen would spend the same amount.

0.6 u = 0.4 u + 1.2 + 0.4
0.6 u - 0.4 u = 1.2 + 0.4
0.2 u = 1.6

1 u = 1.6 ÷ 0.2 = 8

Number of dragon fruits that Jade bought
= 1 u + 3
= 8 + 3
= 11

= 0.6 u 
= 0.6 x 8 
= $4.80
