1 u + 3 |
Value |
0.9 |
0.7 |
Total value |
0.9 u |
0.7 u + 2.1 |
(a)
Number of pears that Shannon bought = 1 u
Number of oranges that Gem bought = 1 u + 3
Amount that Shannon paid = 0.9 x 1 u = 0.9 u
Amount that Gem paid = 0.7(1 u + 3) = 0.7 u + 2.1
If Gem spent another $0.10, both Gem and Shannon would spend the same amount.
0.9 u = 0.7 u + 2.1 + 0.1
0.9 u - 0.7 u = 2.1 + 0.1
0.2 u = 2.2
1 u = 2.2 ÷ 0.2 = 11
Number of oranges that Gem bought
= 1 u + 3
= 11 + 3
= 14
(b)
Amount that Shannon spent on the pears
= 0.9 u
= 0.9 x 11
= $9.90
Answer(s): (a) 11; (b) $9.90
