1 u + 3 |
Value |
0.6 |
0.4 |
Total value |
0.6 u |
0.4 u + 1.2 |
(a)
Number of apples that Diana bought = 1 u
Number of coconuts that Penelope bought = 1 u + 3
Amount that Diana paid = 0.6 x 1 u = 0.6 u
Amount that Penelope paid = 0.4(1 u + 3) = 0.4 u + 1.2
If Penelope spent another $1.20, both Penelope and Diana would spend the same amount.
0.6 u = 0.4 u + 1.2 + 1.2
0.6 u - 0.4 u = 1.2 + 1.2
0.2 u = 2.4
1 u = 2.4 ÷ 0.2 = 12
Number of coconuts that Penelope bought
= 1 u + 3
= 12 + 3
= 15
(b)
Amount that Diana spent on the apples
= 0.6 u
= 0.6 x 12
= $7.20
Answer(s): (a) 12; (b) $7.20
